Hosted and moderated by KCRW's multi-talented Garth Trinidad, the evening featured Quincy's reflections on a lifetime producing for some of music's greatest icons, including Miles Davis, Aretha Franklin, Frank Sinatra, and of course, Michael Jackson. In the world of DJs, it is common practice to pay tribute to an artist the moment they pass. Biggie, 2Pac, Jay Dilla: stature grows exponentially the moment life expires, and once-critics praise genius once deceased. Artists become icons, and followers abound. As a DJ, I have always resisted the posthumous-tribute trend. Until now.
Last night, when I heard the news of Michael Jackson's death, I thought first about the man: damaged, bizarre, cartoonish, tragic. I sighed the way you do when a sad story comes to an end.
But then I turned on his music. Song after song, album after album - like listening for the first time - and I was floored. Years of tabloid gossip, freakshow antics and facial reconstruction may have poisoned our perception of the man... but nothing can poison this music. And it occurred to me, more than anything else, that will define the legacy of Michael Jackson.
In the history of music's bizarre personalities and tragic stories, no artist's music will ever eclipse the perversity of the man quite like Michael Jackson. Our love of Kanye can only survive so many ego-rants. Not even R.Kelly's brilliant songwriting can outshine his extra-curricular activities forever. But no matter what Michael Jackson did during his life, nothing could change the way we feel about his music.
So today, in an unprecedented move, I join the ranks of what will undoubtedly be 8 million DJ tributes with my own Michael Jackson tribute, entitled "Man or the Music." It is no "greatest hits," no "best of" mix like J.Period fans have come to know. It is simply a stream-of-consciousness mix of my own personal favorite Michael Jackson records, plus some unreleased rarities and demo versions of MJ classics. No matter what you think of the man, I hope you enjoy the music.

For all those who could not be in attendance, Peter Rosenberg’s first installment of “Noisemakers” featuring DJ Premier was a night to remember. With live band Igmar Thomas & The Cypher making mincemeat of a laundry list of classic Premier beats—plus turntablist Rob Swift recreating classic Primo scratches live!—the night got off to a great start. Host Cipha Sounds warmed things up with his own story of being inspired by Premier at a young age—a recurring theme throughout the night from all the hip hop artists in attendance. As the lights dimmed, J.Period’s exclusive Primo tribute mix (1 of 2 created for the show) flipped through highlights of a career that has set the standard for what a hip hop producer should be, including tracks from Biggie, Nas, Jay-Z and more. Sun Nov 09, 2008 BIG DADDY KANE 20TH ANNIVERSARY RECAP!!! JUICE CREW REUNION!
The incomparable Big Daddy Kane showed why he is one of the all-time greats last night in an incredible performance at B.B. King's, featuring J.Period holding down the turntables throughout the night, and a long list of special surprise guests. Back-stage was a who's who of hip hop icons, with Busta Rhymes, Nice'n'Smooth and more, all stopping in to pay tribute to King Asiatic. But the highlights took place on stage: Kane and Biggie's original DJ Mister Cee; a Juice Crew reunion with Marley Marl, Masta Ace, Roxanne Shante, Craig G, and Biz Markie, M.O.P, The Beatnuts, and more. In between acts, J.Period and host Talent kept the crowd hype, dropping hip hop classics to keep the sold-out crowd going crazy all night long. And backed by stellar live band Connie Price & The Keystones (also featured when Kane and J.Period toured for Scion in 2007) and both Kane's original DJ Mister Cee AND his current tour DJ Skazz Digga, Big Daddy Kane hit fans in the head with everything from Young, Gifted & Black to Raw to Ain't No Half Steppin. The famous Kane dance duo Scoob & Scrap Lover even took the stage to revive some of their old moves in front of a hype crowd over a thousand fans, including some of the Retro Kids front and center, dressed in godl chains and 88 high-top fades. Next time we better I see you rhymin all the lyrics if you're gonna dress the part! Mister Cee and the diabolical Biz Markie each tore the set down on the turntables as well, and J.Period & Skazz Digga kept the party rocking for over an hour after Kane's set, keeping the b-boys content. J.Period brought in some surprise guests, which included Jorge "Pop Master Fabel" Pabon and Crazy Legs from Rock Steady Crew, Keith Murray, and Jeru Tha Damaja.
Other performers included KRS-One, DJ Premier. Buckshot.

Last week, Billboard Magazine showed J.Period some mainstream love with a prominent feature in their Cover Story on about artists using USB Flash drives as the next evolution of digital music distribution. Side by side with platinum-selling mainstream artists Matchbox Twenty, Barenaked Ladies and Jennifer Lopez, J.Period was the ONLY DJ featured adopting this trendsetting new marketing strategy. With daily interviews, radio and TV appearances, gigs at some of South Africa's hottest clubs, and an exclusive private listening session, J.Period invaded Johannesburg and Cape Town last week for a highly memorable 7-day tour! ! J.Period appeared on Jo'Berg's biggest hip hop station YFM 99.2, SA's biggest urban station Metro FM, Africa's Channel O (broadcast to 52 countries!), conducted interviews with Y-Mag, Hype Magazine and more, all hyping his 4 live performances below:

At Capitol Records an Invitation Only crowd of 100 was treated to excerpts from J.'s award-winning mixtapes, followed by a Q&A session hosted by YFM's Lee, meeting with some of SA's local talent, including MCs Maggz, Morale, Landmynz, producer Omen, and local b-boy crews and industry reps. The following night, J. held it down at Fourways' "Black Orchid," keeping the crowd rocking to hip hop, R&B, reggae... but it was the following night at the upscale Moloko that J.Period stole the show. Rocking the crowd from start to finish with upbeat dancefloor bangers, J.Period showed his versatility and impressed the SA crowd with new and classic hip hop and R&B, rocking alongside hometown favorite DJ Waxy. Next it was off to Cape Town, where J.Period rocked a dancehall set at Zula Music, before taking a much needed day off to take in the local sights! 2 rounds of lost luggage couldn't hold the team back as J.Period and Truelements/Lyrics To Go Tour Manager, Tamir Z. Brown laid the groundwork for a steady stream of future J.Period visits to this growing hip hop market.

J.Period was holding it down from 6-9pm in support of Upliftment Jamaica's charity event on Thursday, November 15 @ Cielo. Upliftment Jamaica's annual NYC Pre-Gala Cocktail Reception hosted by Russell Simmons, brought together toy donation, cocktail sampling, plus a special performance by 77Klash and Jah Dan. Moreover, there were appearances by Dr. Ben Chavis, Sway from MTV, Remy Ma, Styles P, to name a few. Lucky attendees were able to take home gift bags that included J.Period's free CDs. All event proceeds went to fighting poverty and improving living conditions in Jamaica.

Spinning a mixture of R&B and hip hop while Legend prepared to take the stage, J.Period amped up the crowd with new cuts from Kanye, Common and Kweli, classics from Mary J., Biggie and Rakim and more! Newcomers "The James Gang" hit the stage next, followed by rising R&B songstress Estelle, and finally the man of the hour, John Legend.
